Pierogi – what is that?
Pierogi are one of the most popular dish in Polish cuisine. They are also well-known in Slovakia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Japan and Italy. This dish is very similar to the dumplings – it is made of the cooked or baked pastry with various kind of fillings, for example meat, sour cabbage and mushrooms, white cheese and potatoes, millet, soybeans, carrot, rubbed beetroots or even sweet cheese with fruits. There are different ways to prepare it: boiling, frying, simmering, or steaming. The possibilites of mixing the filings of pierogi are unlimited! They can be savoury or sweet. It might be the reason why they are so popular and why the taste of pierogi is something one can long for!
The history of pierogi
Pierogi are well-known in Poland since XIII. There is a possibility that the word pierogi is made from russian word „pir” which means holiday. The name of dish was inspired by the fact, that once for every occasion there were different kinds of pierogi. For example for wedding there were „henhouse dumplings” with hens meat. For funeral meal millet dumplings were made.
Make pierogi, it’s easy!
What do you need?
- 1 kg of wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 120 ml of oil
- 400 ml of hot water
- Combine flour, salt and oil than add a little bit of water several times.
- Develop the pastry. and roll it out.
- Cut the pastry in round shapes and fill it with your favorite fill.
- Now the only thing to do it is to cook it and… it’s done!
